2000 Lexus LS400
By Bob Storck
Lexus created a spot in the luxury market for buyers just below the
Germans. They joined the cab-forward trend by moving windshield forward
and stretching the wheelbase, mainly to gain rear seat leg room.
The designers raised controls in the dash and made them larger. The
clock and temperature indicators are placed high in the dash and can be
read by any person in the car.
There is an optional memory control that will provide two settings for
all seat, headrest, steering wheel, outside mirror and even seat belt
mount positions. The only other options are a moon roof, traction
control, upgrade radios, air suspension, and heated seats.
The 4 liter V8 engine has 10.4:1 compression ratio to bring it up to
290 hp. Engineering changes have reduced friction in engine for better
fuel economy -- a 2 mpg gain. This is helped by the improved
aerodynamics and a remarkable 200 pound weight loss.
For 2000 Lexus copies Mercedes with a brake assist feature that
shortens emergency stopping distance. Add this to stability control, and
the LS400 is not only more comfortable but also safer. A wise way to
protect both your personal and automotive treasures.
